About Burlesque
Burlesque ( ) n. A literary or dramatic work that ridicules a subject either by presenting a solemn subject in an undignified style or an inconsequential subject in a dignified style.
History of Burlesque
The world of burlesque may seem to be an exotic one that is exclusive to dark Gentlemen’s Clubs but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Burlesque began in American theatres during the 1840’s in the form of shows featuring comic sketches and dance routines often mocking opera, Shakespearean drama and musical theatre.
By the 1880’s burlesque had amassed certain defined rules, including risqué costumes for the female performers and sexually suggestive and humorous dialogue.
The ‘strip’ was introduced to the stage by burlesque promoters towards the end of the century when all but G-strings and “pasties” to cover their nipples were worn. Although, understandably, very popular with men, this unfortunately gave burlesque a sleazy reputation that was almost impossible to shake off, even to this day. This contributed to their eventual downfall in the late 1930’s.
In the last ten years, however, burlesque has made a comeback and, thanks to performers like Dita Von Teese, has transformed itself from sleazy to glamorous and nostalgic. This has resulted in the opening of burlesque clubs such as The Kitten Club and Club Noir in London along with many other burlesque events across the country. These can be easily found through the internet and your local entertainment information.
Criticism
Despite its popularity there is an ongoing debate as to whether burlesque should be viewed as a theatrical performance or a pornographic display. There are strong opinions on both sides and many people still feel that burlesque is demeaning to women and that they are not performance artists but merely strippers objectifying their bodies.
On the other end of the scale there appears to be an increasing number of people who appreciate burlesque performances as art, just as much as any other dance recital or cabaret show. Many women who practice burlesque report that it gives them a feeling of empowerment and sexuality whilst embracing their natural curves. Many women feel that, in an age where size zero adorns the cover of nearly every magazine, women of all shapes and sizes should be able to feel glamorous and beautiful by doing something they enjoy.
